What started with a goal of raising $1,000 for the Lake Chelan Swim Program has blossomed into a community wide challenge that now hopes to bring in $9,000 or more!

Lake Chelan Swim, a non-profit organization focused on providing free swim lessons through the Manson Parks Department, is gearing up for its 24th summer season under the direction of long-time lifeguard Viki Downey. The program in Manson to offer swim lessons for free began in 2011.

KOZI morning show host Jeff Conwell began the challenge by agreeing to a January swim in the cold waters of Lake Chelan if he could generate a minimum of $1,000 in pledges. That goal was quickly accomplished and others soon entered into the fun by offering to join Conwell with the support of additional pledges.

Those who have agreed to participate in the swim as of time of publication include KOZI weekend host Ken Johannessen, Chelan County Sheriff Deputies Nigel Hunter and Ryan Moody as well as Manson Elementary Principal Ben Riippi and Chelan PE teacher Michael Tucker.

The plan is to have the volunteer swimmers take part in the annual Vicky Downey Polar Bear Swim scheduled for 1 pm on Saturday, January 17. Downey says it takes about $16,000 to operate the swim lesson program and the money raised from this challenge will go a long way towards attaining the necessary funds. With over $8,000 raised by New Year’s Eve morning, Downey is confident the goal will be met and perhaps exceeded.

The challenge officially ends tonight at midnight, but donations for the swim program can continue to be made through the Swim website.

Swim lessons in Manson will begin in June and continue through mid-August. They are free and open to those 4 years of age through adult. For more information on Lake Chelan Swim visit lakechelanswim.com.
