September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

submitted by Tim Dillman, Associate Director of Community Libraries, NCW Libraries

Every September, libraries across the country celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month. It’s a simple reminder to get a library card. It’s also an opportunity to think about what that little card represents for you and your neighbors.

A library card gets you far more than books. It connects you to free programs, homework help, job and career resources, printer and copier services, streaming movies and music, cultural events, technology, and opportunities to learn something new. It gives you access to resources that can make everyday life a little easier and a lot more fun.

This year’s theme, “Strengthening Communities, One Card at a Time,” captures something important about what NCW Libraries means to our region. A library card isn’t just an individual benefit. Every card represents a connection between a person and the resources, opportunities, and people around them.

It might be a student who needs a quiet place to study and help with homework. A job seeker using a public computer to apply for work. A parent looking for an affordable activity on a Saturday morning. A small business owner researching an idea. A new resident looking for ways to connect.

Across Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Okanogan, and Ferry counties, NCW Libraries provides these opportunities at 30 library locations, along with our bookmobile and Mail Order Library. Each community has its own character and needs, and our libraries reflect that, from storytimes and book clubs to LEGO challenges, craft programs, cultural events, and more.

What remains consistent is our commitment to providing welcoming places where everyone can access information, discover new ideas, and connect with their community.

And it all starts with a library card.

If you have one, this month is a great time to rediscover everything it can do for you. If you don’t, getting one is free and easy. And if you’re a business owner, teacher, community organization, or simply someone who cares about your community, I encourage you to help spread the word.

The library belongs to all of us. One card connects each of us to a world of possibilities. When more people are connected, our communities are stronger.
