Manson First Responders Aid in Rescue; Offers Timely Safety Reminders

Information released by Manson Fire Department

Just before 9:30 a.m. Friday morning (1/24/2020) Manson Firefighters, Manson EMS and Chelan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Roses Lake Boat Launch in Manson for a report of a dog who fell through the ice. A resident living near the boat launch heard calls for help and dialed 911.

Within minutes of the 911 call, first arriving responders located a male in wet clothing on the shoreline who had self extricated from the water after trying to help his dog. The dog was still in the water and was struggling to stay above water.

A Manson Firefighter rescue swimmer was able to enter the water and made a successful rescue on the dog.

Neither the man nor his dog required medical assistance on scene.

A REMINDER FROM THE MANSON FIRE DEPARTMENT:

The ice is very thin on Roses Lake, and may be the same or worse on other area waterways. The ice was at Roses Lake was found to be about an inch to inch and a half thick in the rescue area, with slushy or standing water on top. This ice is too thin for people to access safely, and signs show that there was a good amount of foot traffic on this ice recently.

With conditions expected to remain warmer than normal, this ice will continue to degrade rapidly.

It is recommended to not access ice covered lakes without knowing the ice conditions first. It is also recommended that when accessing any ice covered body of water, wear a life jacket. A life jacket or PFD will be able to help keep anyone who falls through the ice to remain above the ice sheet and keep an individual afloat with little exertion. A PFD also can act as additional thermal protection.

Also, always go with someone else, not alone as in the case this morning. If you see someone fall through the ice, call 911 immediately, do not attempt a rescue. Emergency responders have the necessary equipment and training to safely effect a rescue.

Stay safe!
