Community Meeting:

A community meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, Monday, August 3, at Chelan County Fire District #8, 2200 Entiat Way, Entiat, Wash. Current Situation:

On Sunday, most of the activity was on the east side of the Little Giant Fire. This included the fire burning along the south shore of Lake Chelan east of Grouse Mountain and northwest of Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park. Structure preparation is ongoing in this area.

Across Lake Chelan from the main fire front, fire crews attempted to access a spot fire via boat intending to use direct suppression tactics. Unfortunately, due to the steep and rugged terrain found in this area, fire crews were unable to access the area safely. However, aircraft dropped water via both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters on this area north of Safety Harbor Campground on the northern shore of Lake Chelan.

From Slide Ridge south toward Baldy Mountain and Mud Creek into the Entiat drainage, crews focused on creating containment lines on the ridge. On the west side of the Entiat River, work continued to tie primary containment lines from Mud Creek into Mosquito Ridge north to Maverick Saddle to connect completed containment lines in the Alder Creek area.

On the southwest side of the fire, crews conducted a strategic firing operation by ensuring a controlled descent of the fire toward the Big Meadow Creek Road by having fire crews and containment line in place, including a lay with a pump in place to draft water out of the Twin Lakes. This was a deliberate posture to eliminate a ragged, uncontained fire line—under cooler temperatures—by decreasing the overall intensity of the fire and eliminating nooks that fire could continue to burn in. With a more linear edge, firefighters were better able to use direct suppression tactics more efficiently and safely to establish an anchor point.

The fire remains on the east side of Chiwawa Ridge north to Maple Creek. North of Estes Butte, the fire progressed further into the Glacier Peak Wilderness west of Fifth of July Mountain. In the northeastern part of the fire in the Entiat drainage near Cottonwood Campground, the previously mentioned spot fires are burning into one another as expected.

Today, fire crews will once again look to gain access to the fire on the north side of Lake Chelan through other access point options. Structure protection and preparation remain a high priority for the Twenty-Five Mile area and the southern end of the fire area. This includes having 24-hour staffing across the fire.

For the area east of Twenty-Five Mile Creek, firefighters are looking for containment line opportunities along Slide Ridge through Mud Creek into the Entiat River north of Ardenvoir. On the west side, east of Twin Lakes, firefighters will look for opportunities to use direct suppression tactics where they can while bolstering the containment lines in the Big Meadow Area.

Weather:

Once the trough moves out of the area, dry northwest flow will move in as a ridge builds along the Pacific Northwest coast. This will result in dry conditions with mostly weak winds and will lead to wildfire smoke and haze issues during the week. Additionally, temperatures will warm back into the 90s by Wednesday.

Safety and Closures:

There is a forest closure for portions of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in the area of the Little Giant Fire. This closure prohibits entry or use of roads, recreation sites, and trails within a defined area within the Wenatchee River/Entiat Ranger Districts to ensure the safety of the public and firefighting resources during the Little Giant Fire. Level 2 fire restrictions are in effect for public lands on the Forest.
