Sam Austin and Micah Larson Recognized for their Outstanding Efforts
Submitted by CHS Athletic Director, Rob Rainville
Each week, Coaches nominate Student-Athletes in their programs that excel in their sport that week. Then those Nominees are voted on by the Principals at both schools. We would like to recognize our Student-Athletes for their efforts and appreciate them representing the Lake Chelan School District wearing the “Chelan” uniform.
Austin and Larson Voted Student Athletes of the Week
Sam Austin – Baseball
Sam relieved Breckin Sporseen in the third inning of game one, earning his first win of the season. Sam had 5 innings of shutout, one hit, seven strikeouts pitching, using only 50 pitches. A good day, indeed, for the big lefty – Coach Papasedero
Micah Larson – Tennis
Senior Micah Larson went 3-0 in #1 singles this past week, and did so in convincing fashion, with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Liberty Bell, an 8-1 win over Pateros, and a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ephrata. In addition, he has been a reliable leader in practice by demonstrating proper technique and strategy when introducing new skills, drills to younger players. Micah has helped lead the boys to a 3-0 record – Coach Rothlisberger
Congratulations to all the CHS Nominees! Here’s what their coaches had to say about them:
Breckin Sporseen – Baseball
Breckin threw 2 shutout innings against cashmere, earning the win. At the plate, Breckin scored a run, and drove in two with a scorching double over the left fielders head. More importantly, he showed a great work ethic in practice, and embraced a willingness to hustle on each and every play.
Matt Smith – Track
Top ten in both Shot Out and Javelin at Bridgeport Jamboree on Tuesday Shot Put – 35 feet 9 inches Javelin – 106 ft 6 inches.
Mireya Garibay – Track
Top 3 in the 1600 at Tuesday’s Jamboree in Bridgeport
Taylor Boykin – Softball
She’s a fantastic team leader because she’s so positive with all JV and varsity girls, as well as coaches. Taylor is also a fantastic player at third base, being tight on the ball every play and finishing the play with an accurate throw. She does the job. At bat, she had 3 hits for 4 at bats at the plate at the jamboree, a stand out among the players.
Ashley Sams – Softball
All around and utility player. She does whatever we ask her to do -210%. She also did great at the home run derby games this past weekend. She has a great attitude and never stops trying to be better.
Kaylin Boykin – Golf
Shot a 99 at Wenatchee Valley Golf Invite; though some might feel that’s not such a fantastic score, it really is when you consider that last year at this time, she shot an 84 for just 9 holes! That’s the equivalent of shooting almost 70 strokes less after only 1 year. Great job Kaylin!

Luis Mendez – Soccer
Hard worker and determined. Stepped into roles he was not familiar with and executed flawlessly.
Each Student-Athlete of the week winner will receive a “free cheeseburger, fries and drink” from B.C. MacDonalds. Thank you to Brent and Afni MacDonald for their support of Chelan Athletics and the Lake Chelan School District. Great job all Student-Athlete nominees and winners.
