It was a great way to begin a new season as both the Chelan Girls and Boys basketball teams won their games at Cle Elum on Thursday night. The Lady Goats won their contest against the Warriors 41-30 and the Boys completed the sweep with 76-69 victory.

Head Coach Rob Huddleston provides the recap. “The girls  showed a lot of first game jitters and couldn’t find the bottom of the basket in the first quarter.  Chelan trailed by 4 at the end of the first quarter.  The girls continued to play hard and apply a lot of pressure which resulted in some Warrior turnovers and Goat baskets.  At halftime Chelan trailed by only 1 point. The Lady Goats came out of the locker room and worked hard on the defensive end which helped with the offensive flow.  The lid came off the basket and the girls were able to bury a couple three’s.  They also moved the ball better inside and were able to get some open looks.  After the 3rd quarter Chelan finally pulled ahead by 6 points. In the 4th quarter  Cle Elum found themselves in a hole and had to start fouling in hopes of Chelan missing free throws to extend the game.  The Lady Goats were up to the task and made enough shots from the charity stripe to pull off an 11 point victory, 41-30. Chelan out rebounded the Warriors 42-25 on the night.

The Warriors were very generous hosts as they had their bus mechanic fix a broken belt that nearly left the girls stranded.  They also provided transportation for the team while our bus was being worked on.  An amazing gesture of true hospitality.”

Chelan Scoring

Hailey Watson – 3

Molly Oswald – 7

Booh Huddleston – 10

Ashley Sams – 10

Matea Ivory – 5

Aliyah Finch – 6

The Boys had a tougher time of it, but outlasted Cle Elum to win 76-69 in a high scoring contest. Chelan outscored the Warriors 21-17 in the first quarter, but a low scoring second quarter allowed Cle Elum to take a 39-33 halftime lead. Chelan pounced on the Warriors with a big third quarter outscoring the home team 22-5 and giving the Goats an 11 point lead after three quarters of play. That lead would be enough as Chelan was able to hang on and win by seven points.

Head Coach Jeff Pearl had this to say, “it certainly wasn’t our best 32 minutes of basketball.  We struggled shooting the ball early, a lot of that was shot selection.  We also gave up way too many points in the first half.  But our guys really dug in defensively in the 3rd quarter and captured some momentum.  I was proud of how our guys gutted out the win on a night our shots wouldn’t seem to fall.”

Chelan’s leading scorers:

Nate Harding 20 pts
Connor Wilson 26 pts
Cade Christopherson 14pts
Reed Stamps 12 pts
The Chelan teams will return to action with back-to-back games next week. They play at Okanogan on Friday night and host Granger on Saturday night.
