Although Chelan County reports low voter turnout (26%) for yesterday’s primary election, the Countywide results closely resemble those cast across the state.

In a primary election that drew less than 25% of the voters statewide, Maria Cantwell will defend her Senate seat against former TV Anchor Susan Hutchison. Statewide Cantwell emerged with 55.45% of the vote (42.97% in Chelan County) and Hutchison received 23.83% (36.5% in Chelan County). The remaining 26 contenders split approximately 20% of the vote.

In the race for Congressional District 8, which includes Chelan and Kittitas Counties, along with parts of King and Pierce Counties, Dino Rossi holds the lead with 43% of the vote (49.56% in Chelan County). It appears he will run against Kim Schrier, who garnered 18.82% of the statewide vote (16.1% in Chelan County). Close behind Schrier is Jason Rittereiser with 17.56% of the vote (14.05% in Chelan County). Final numbers from ballots not yet counted could impact this race.

Current results for the 12th Legislative District race (position 1) had Keith Goehner leading with 45% of the vote followed by Dr. Ann Diamond with 29.36%. In the 12th Legislative District race (position 2) incumbent Mike Steele has 60.44% of the vote over challenger Valerie Sarratt with 33.04%.

In two other Chelan County contested races, Shon Smith (46.42%) will face Bob Bugert (38.38%) for County Commission position 2; and Allen Blackmon (45.69%) will face Kyle Mott (35.77%) for the District Court Judge #2 position.

Two Douglas County races of particular interest this year show Marc Straub running strong (64.4%) for the Douglas County Commission position 3 against rival Norman (Buck) Tupling. Incumbent Sheriff Kevin Morris is leading rival Leeon Leyde with 62.17% of the vote to Leyde’s 37.83%.
