Submitted by Coach Romero

Congratulations to the student-athletes who competed in track and field this year. We are proud of all their accomplishments and wish them continued success at state.

I would like to first say thank you to everyone that came out to cheer on and support our track and field athletes. All our hard work this year has prepared us for this past Thursday. Thank you to our coaches for your efforts this year as well. And thank you to our parents, family and community for coming out and rooting our kids on as well.

We had a lot to be excited and grateful for. Even though we may not have come up strong in the TEAM POINTS for Districts, we had some great individual performances to be proud about.

On to State! Good Luck…Coach Sargent, Head Coach Erik Romero, Molly Oswald, Ava Dickes, Lucy Bordner, Elly Collins, Matea Ivory, Aliyah Villasenor, Coach Robin Weathersby, Coach Ken Barnes, Coach Mark Anderson and Bart Mendivil.

Six CHS Girls Advance to State

Our girls are represented well at State next week. Starting out, Elly Collins, placed 3rd in the Pole Vault but was able to clear Qualifying State height of 9 ft 9 inches. Her height of 10 ft qualifies to state. She also came back to compete in the girls 100-meter hurdle race.

She not only won the race, after a neck to neck with a fellow Cascade competitor, but she also set a new Personal Record for herself. 15.38 was .03 better than 2nd place. She also competed in the 300-meter hurdles and performed well. She placed 2nd and will also be competing at state in this event.

Our girl distance runners fared well. In the 800 meter run, we had 3 girls place in the top 8. Emilie Barnes, Ashlyn Sanderson and Olivia Nygreen ran well. Emilie ran a personal best of 2:36.84 placing her 4th. Ashlyn placed 5th with a time of 2:40.28 and Olivia came in 8th with a time of 2:50.04.

Our girl sprinters performed well. Ava Dickes not only placed 1st in the 100-meter dash, but she also set a school record. The record, from 2000 at 12.4, was broken. Ava’s time of 12.35 came .05 from a District 6 Record as well. Matea Ivory also qualified to state in the 100. Her time of 12.80 was faster than the qualifying time of 12.99.

Matea Ivory was .06 away from placing 2nd. Her time of 26.51 was her best. Ava Dickes also is our District Champion with a 26.15. Nearly breaking another school record.

With our girls 4×100 relay team, they came prepared and excited. The team of Matea Ivory, Elly Collins, Molly Oswald and Ava Dickes ran well and continue to get better with their handoffs. It showed with a time of 50.79. Which is currently top 5 in the state. Nice Job girls

We finished our field events with some high notes. Maritza Blanco placed 6th for us in the Shot Put with a distance of 29 ft and 9.50 inches. She also placed 5th in the Discus with a throw of 88 ft and 5 inches. A Personal Best for her. Olivia Nygreen also threw well.

She placed 7th with a distance of 78 ft and 9.25 inches. Hailee Huddleston and Haley Watson placed well in the javelin. Huddleston placed 4th with a throw of 87 ft and 8 inches.

Watson placed 5th with a throw of 70 ft and 8 inches. Lucy Bornder placed 5th for us in the Triple Jump. After battling through some injuries this year. She performed well with a jump of 29 ft and 6 inches.

Our girls team was young but was challenged all year long. We have some young student-athletes and look forward to next year. We are taking a total of 6 girls this year to state in multiple events. We hope to finish on a high note. One more week. Good girls at state.

Kyle came in 8th with a time of 25.39. We also had a relay team in the 4×100… The team of Bert Mendivil, Skyler Gordon, Kyle Jackson and JC Austin ran a tough race with a time of 47.69. This team ran well and are all coming back next year.

Our Throwing events came up well. Matt Smith started off with a good showing in the shot put. He placed 5th with a Personal Best of 39 ft and 7.5 inches. In the discus event we had a few top 8 placers.

Alex Neri saved his best throw for the end, 113 ft and 7.5 inches placed him 5th. Hunter Logan placed 7th with a Personal Best of 107 ft 7 inches. In the Javelin event, we had placed 5th – 8th. Rolando Virruetta-Farfan threw 120 ft and 2 inches, Matt Smith threw 118 ft and 4 inches, Skyler Gordon threw 106 ft and 6 inches and JJ Mercado threw 99 ft and 2 inches.

JJ Mercado came short of standing on the podium, placing 9th, with a jump of 16 ft and 1.5 inches. Arne Castrejon also PRd with a jump of 15 ft and 5.25 inches. Bert Mendivil had a tough day in the Long Jump. He came back and bounced back well in the Triple Jump. After two initial scratches, he made a legal jump to get into the finals.

Once getting there, he let loose and set a Personal Record for himself. His winning jump of 41 ft and 1 inch got him the 1st place victory and District Championship.

Even though we only get to take one Male to State for our Track Team, I am very proud of all of boys and how hard they worked this year. We have a young team and I look forward to the improvements this team will make. Good luck to Bert Mendivil next week as he competes Friday at 3:10 pm for the Boys 1A Triple Jump Final.

Good luck to the seven track and field athletes at State next week at Cheney, WA. Eastern Washington University is a great place and will be a fun weekend.

Thank you again to everyone that came out. I hope you get a chance to drive EAST and watch our athletes compete. The schedule will come out next week.
