CHS Winter Sports Conclude with Wrestling at State
by Dennis Rahm
Congratulations to Chelan High School Wrestlers for battling their way into State Competition. The Lake Chelan Valley is very proud of all our student-athletes for their effort and enthusiasm throughout the season.
Weather conditions forced the cancellation of regional tournaments, resulting in a record number of wrestlers – more than 2,500 – competing at the Tacoma Dome for the coveted wins.
Three Chelan wrestlers medaled over the weekend at the 1A Mat Classic in Tacoma. Skyler Gordon in the 195-pound classification, Erik Alcala at 160-pounds, and Angel Mendoza at 182-pounds. Gordon lost in the championship match to Dalton Swayze of Okanogan to place second while Alcala lost in the semi-finals, but bounced back with a pin to capture third place. Mendoza lost early in the tourney and battled out of the consolation bracket for a hard earned eighth place finish.
Other Goat wrestlers at State included JC Austin at 126-pounds, Jose Mercado at 132, Carlos Venegas at 138, Sky Malone at 152, and Adrian Martinez in the 220-pound division. The team title was captured by Colville while Chelan placed 18th out of the 47 schools that competed.
