East and West Crews within 8 miles of each other

information released by WSDOT

Hello North Cascades enthusiasts — Another week of great progress has brought the crews within 8 miles of each other.  On the west side, the crew has cleared to milepost 155.  On the east side, we reached milepost 163 and have started in on the Liberty Bell avalanche chutes.

The clearing crew reports that the unopened avalanche pathways are still full of snow, and with persistent warm weather, there is risk of avalanche danger.  We strongly advised those interested in recreating behind the closure points to consult the Northwest Avalanche Center for current backcountry avalanche conditions.

The road closure remains at milepost 134 near Newhalem, and milepost 177 at Early Winters.

With some big avalanche pathways to get through, there’s still a couple week until we reopen.  Even after the road is clear of snow, we will need to complete roadway repairs before we can reopen.  Those already planning their spring drive over NCH should keep in mind that many facilities remain closed until later in the season.

We have some new pics this week, including some drone shots of the work through Liberty Bell #2 and #3 on FlickrFacebookInstagram, and Twitter. You can also find out about our progress and learn more about the route on the North Cascades Highway webpage.
