Be prepared before you head outdoors

It’s been a busy summer for Chelan County Emergency Management.

With the number of visitors to Chelan County, we have one of the busiest EMs in this state. Over the July 25 weekend alone, emergency responders answered nine search-and-rescue calls, including two rescues in the Colchuck Lake area of the Enchantments. And summer isn’t over yet!

If you do become injured and need assistance, it will take time for search-and-rescue personnel to reach you. If EM needs to request a hoist-capable helicopter, that also takes time for helicopters to arrive from outside our area.

So before you head into the outdoors:

  • Check the weather forecast. Are there any wildfires where you are headed?
  • Research the trail you will be on. Be honest with yourself. Does the trail match your ability?
  • Wear proper hiking clothing. Plan for both heat, cold and rain. Conditions can change.
  • Wear proper footwear (flip-flops are not hiking shoes).
  • Prepare for sun exposure. Consider starting early before it gets hot. Choose a trail with shade. Wear sunscreen, cover your skin and stay hydrated.
  • Know what time the sun sets. Many calls to EM are from people who get frightened because they weren’t expecting to be out after dark. Pack a headlamp, just in case.
  • Pack the 10 Essentials. Include extra food and water in case you get lost.
  • Share your hiking plan with someone before you go.
  • Consider bringing a GPS communication device, such as a Garmin, for areas with no cell service.
