Lake Chelan Multisport Foundation is a nonprofit organization in the Chelan Valley that hosts a weekend of triathlons and running events each summer. All the profits from the weekend are donated to local youth programs.
Roots Community School was one recipient of grant money from the Multisport Foundation. Roots will use this grant money to purchase equipment for a Physical Education program intended to promote sport/activity throughout the student body and promote a lifelong love of health and wellness.
As a grant recipient, Roots was invited to volunteer at the ChelanMan. Volunteer Coordinator, Tara Elsner, had the idea to place the Roots kids and parents at the finish line on Saturday to award medallions to race finishers. It was an early morning, but the kids had a great time, and from the look on many athletes’ faces, they enjoyed seeing the smiling kids at the finish line as well.
One participating parent, Krista Frahm said her son Logan, age 7, was inspired and motivated by the adult participants. “Watching a really good friend race made me feel really confident about my race the next day,” said Logan.
Frahm said “after watching the ChelanMan athletes on Saturday and passing out medallions at the finish line, my kids could hardly wait for their own shot at the Splash & Dash (Kids Triathon) on Sunday. They raced hard, raced safe, and earned their own ChelanMan finishers medallions,” she said proudly.
Frahm’s 4-year old son, Gavin, said “the splash and dash swim was not very long but the run and bike were kind of hard because of the uphills.” However, he went on to say he “wishes there was a ChelanMan every day to compete in.”
