Community-wide beach cleanup scheduled for April 13

information released

Lake Chelan Restore the Shore” needs your help! Keep It Blue–Lake Chelan, the Lake Chelan Research Institute and The Chelan Project from Chelan HS are teaming up for the 2nd annual community-wide beach cleanup for Lake Chelan on Saturday, April 13, 2024. The event is sponsored by Campbell’s Resort, the City of Chelan, the Planning Association of Washington, and Pilgrim Lake Services!

On Saturday, April 13, starting at 9:30 a.m., volunteers will gather along the shores of Lake Chelan for the second annual Restore the Shore, a community-wide beach cleanup. You can meet at the parking lot of the City of Chelan Marina, or go directly to the beach you sign up to help clean.

To join in the efforts, go to the Keep It Blue- Lake Chelan event website and register. Below is a map of all locations volunteers will be participating in the cleanup.

Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and their own reusable bags for picking up garbage. We ask participants to pick up all trash items AND fragments of aquatic weeds on the beach and surrounding areas. Each milfoil fragment can propagate into a new plant as the water level rises this Spring. Not only will you be preventing new milfoil growth, but you will also be reducing the total amount of organic carbon in the near-shore environment by removing invasive plants and other organic residue.

Participants also will be asked to take any photos of algae (periphyton) they see growing along the shoreline. This will help us map and track what happens to it as the water rises. Please text your photos to Phil Long at (509) 531-2987.

We hope to see you on Saturday! For additional information visit the Keep It Blue – Lake Chelan website.
