The 2003 former Coast Guard 25′ Safe Boat Defender was purchased through government surplus using just $2,500 from the district budget and $3,000 from the sale of the previous rescue boat. Low hour used Honda 225 hp engines were purchased by the Firefighters Association and Reed’s Marine mounted the engines. Parts needed were paid for from private donation and a surplus fire radio from Orondo FD was installed. In all, the district has gained a valuable lifesaving asset at minimal cost to the taxpayer.
Initially, the boat can transport the district’s rescue swimmers who are trained to free dive to 30′ and can carry portable fire pumps. The district will be seeking grant funds and donations to further equip the boat with a water gun and other equipment.
