Sheriff’s Office Investigators determined the threat was not credible
information released
Sheriff Mike Morrison reports on 1/22/2024 at approximately 8:13 a.m., Rivercom dispatch received a call from Chelan School District, reporting someone had called Morgen Owings Elementary School claiming there was a bomb on the playground. The person said it would go off at a specific time if they were not given a large sum on money. The person hung up without giving any further information.
Deputies responded to the school and assisted with the evacuation of the building prior to the children arriving at the school due to late start. While deputies investigated the report, arriving children were directed to the Community Gym. Further investigation into the information obtained found it to not be credible. Out of an abundance of caution, deputies did an extensive search of the playground in addition to the building itself.
At approximately 10:00 am the school was clear to return to normal operations.
This incident is still under investigation to determine the identity of the person that placed the call. The Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to commend the Chelan School District staff, administration, and students for having a plan in place, and implementing the plan with excellence.
