Chelan Middle School 8th grader, Tiernan Davis, was awarded first place in an VFW-sponsored youth essay competition called “The Patriot’s Pen”. In the photo above, Davis accepts a district award from VFW Post 6853 Commander, Steve Palmbush live on KOZI Radio.
Tiernan’s Patriot‘s Pen essay earned first place among submissions from middle school students in Chelan and Brewster. His essay then went on to earn first place at the district level, competing against students from all across eastern Washington. For its next stop, his submission will be ranked against the top student essays in Washington state.
The VFW Post 6853 also wants to recognize the runners up in our local contest. Pictured are Lauren Ware and Marilyn Gonzalez, both 8th-grade students at Chelan Middle School. Their thoughtful essays made choosing a winner extremely difficult!

The Patriot‘s Pen is a VFW-sponsored youth essay competition, which gives students in grades 6, 7, and 8 an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Congratulations to these amazing student authors!
