Manson and Chelan set to defend their State Titles

Two of the premiere high school volleyball programs in the state of Washington hail from the Lake Chelan Valley, and both Manson and Chelan are excited to begin defense of their respective championships from a year ago when the WIAA Tournament takes place this week at the Sundome in Yakima.

Manson Trojans:

The Manson Trojans begin play Wednesday morning as the number two seed in the 2-B tourney and will face #15 seed Warden at 9:45am. The Trojans return an experienced and talented team led by power hitting senior Stella Petersen and defensive stalwart senior Genesis Torres. Petersen was the 2-B State Player of the Year last season while Torres also earned first team all-state honors.

The Trojans are loaded with talent and had five players selected first team all league this season in Petersen, Torres, Camille Hutton, Phinley Teague and Bailey Evans. Kayden Koth was named second team all league and Coach Hayli Thompson was selected Coach of the Year.

If Manson wins their opening match they will play again at 7:15 Wednesday evening in the quarter finals against the winner of Forks and Riverview. The losers will play at 3:30pm in a loser out contest. Manson and Adna are considered the favorites at this year’s tournament. The 2-B tourney will wrap up play on Thursday.

Chelan Goats:

For the powerhouse Chelan Goat team, they will once again start the 1-A tournament as the number 1 seed and winners of four consecutive state titles. Chelan has developed into one of the elite volleyball programs in the state and will open play this Friday at 2:30 pm against 16th seed Kalama. If they win their first match, the Goats play again at 8 pm versus the winner/loser of the Lynden Christian vs. Stevenson match. The losers will play 6:15 pm Friday in a loser out match.

The Goats have an seasoned squad that returns the State Player of the Year in Junior Bryn Hughbanks and 2 other returning all state players in Senior Lydia Petersen and Sophomore Brooklyn Foyle. Chelan Coach Abby Lewellen is also the reigning 1-A Coach of the Year. In her short coaching career, Lewellen is three for three in championship matches.

Chelan once again this year had the league Player of the Year and Coach of the Year in addition to three first team and two second team all league selections. The 1-A Volleyball Tournament will conclude on Saturday night.
