Campers and Hikers are cautioned about food attractants
Information and photo released by the North Cascades National Park Complex
The North Cascades National Park Complex has issued a closure alert: Pelton Basin Camps are closed until further notice due to bear activity. Bear behavior suggests possible food conditioning at the site.
Additional information from the National Parks: A fed bear is a dead bear. Food conditioned bears pose safety risks to both visitors and the bear itself. Bears can exhibit aggressive behavior when food conditioning has occurred. You can protect yourself and the bear population within the park complex.
For your safety:
• Store food and odorants properly at all times.
• Do not drop packs with food, it rewards the action.
• Do not throw food or trash in fire pits.
• Use bear box or store in hard-sided vehicles with windows raised and doors locked. Store in the cab of a pickup truck.
• Carry bear spray and have it ready for use if needed.
Report all bear encounters to a park information or visitor center immediately.
