Senior Night Salute Recognizes 25

by Dennis Rahm. Special thanks to Josh X. Peterson Photography

While there was certainly disappointment in losing the final home basketball games of the season last Friday night, the games themselves did not detract from the pride in recognizing Senior Night as well as welcoming the newest members of the Chelan Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 25-member Senior salute recognized one Lady Goat basketball player, six from the boys squad, four winter sports cheerleaders and 16 members of the High School Pep Band.

2019 Chelan Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees

The Hall of Fame inductions were held at halftime of the boy’s game and welcomed in the undefeated 1954 State Champion Football Team. That year’s squad finished 8-0 and outscored their opponents by an average of 33.9 points per game to only 5.8. The team was coached by Bill Richards and assistant coach Bill Lippencott. A member of that team, Mike Finnegan, went on to play for Central Washington College where he would earn All-America honors.  Teammate Stan Boyd, who was MVP of the 1954 All State football game, would play his college football at the University of Washington. Members of the 1954 Mountain Goat team who attended the induction ceremony included Jack Holmes, Ray Foster, Bob Boyd, Dean Conaway and Carl Kjobech.

Coach Donene Hendricks was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. She coached volleyball for 21 years in Chelan and served as Head Coach for 14 seasons leading the Lady Goats to 10 state tourney appearances and bringing home eight trophies including a 2010 State Championship. Hendricks was also named Washington State 1-A volleyball Coach of the Year in 2010.

And no, we didn’t forget about the Friday night regular season ending doubleheader against Omak. The girls lost to the Pioneers 47-37 while the boys were upended 66-49. Despite the losses, both Chelan teams will advance to the District Basketball tournament at Eastmont High School on Saturday, February 9. The #3 seeded Lady Goats will play #4 Okanogan at 1 p.m. while the #4 Chelan boys take on #3 Omak at 3 p.m.
