Crews work to construct control lines as fire grows to over 7,700 acres

information released

The Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 3, led by Incident Commander James Osborne, assumed command of the Lower Sugarloaf Fire this morning from the Southern Area Type-3 Gray Team.

Firefighters and support personnel are actively engaged in a full suppression strategy, minimizing the spread of fire where feasible, and protecting structures and critical values at risk. Firefighter and public safety is the top priority of this incident.

Yesterday and overnight, there was growth around the entire perimeter of the fire with the most significant growth in the Tillicum Creek and Indian Creek drainages. Crews worked to construct and secure control lines on the south and southwest edge of the fire and the Mosquito Ridge area.

Operations today will be focused on securing roads and the perimeter including the construction of a dozer line from Mosquito Ridge to the 58 road. Structure protection efforts are occurring in collaboration with local fire departments and State Mobilization resources. Additional resources will be arriving today to support structure protection and containment efforts.

Today’s weather will continue to be hot and dry before a low pressure system comes into the region tonight potentially bringing thunderstorms and gusty outflow winds on Saturday. Fuels are dry and very receptive to ignition and carrying fire quickly. Weather and fuel conditions could result in extreme fire behavior.
