Chelan High School’s innovative Careers in Education/Teacher Academy program, led by the dedicated educator April Slagle, has been making waves in the educational community. Over the past three years, the program has seen remarkable success, with a recent report showcasing the impact of the dual credit program that allows students to earn five college credits from Central Washington University (CWU) for passing the class.

Out of the 48 students who have participated in the program, an impressive 11 are currently enrolled in or will enroll this coming fall in Teacher Education programs at CWU, Washington State University (WSU), or Whitworth University. This translates to a significant 23% return on investment, highlighting the effectiveness of the program in preparing students for future careers in education.

“It’s truly rewarding to see our students pursuing their passion for teaching and continuing their education at esteemed institutions,” remarked April Slagle, the driving force behind the program.

The success of the program can be attributed not only to its rigorous curriculum but also to the hands-on experiences provided to students. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to work in classrooms throughout the district, gaining practical experience and insights into the teaching profession. Additionally, they regularly hear from guest speakers from all parts of the educational system, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the field.

“While classroom learning is essential, nothing can replace the real-world experiences our students gain through working in classrooms and interacting with professionals in the field,” said Slagle.

While the hope is that some of these future educators will return to Chelan to teach, for now, they are in the pipeline, equipped with the skills and knowledge to make a difference in the field of education.

The success of Chelan High School’s Careers in Education/Teacher Academy program underscores the importance of investing in innovative educational initiatives that nurture and support students’ career aspirations. As these aspiring educators embark on their academic journey, they carry with them the invaluable experiences and teachings from their time at Chelan High School, setting a strong foundation for their future endeavors in the field of education.
