Chelan man injured in crash

Highway 97-A was closed in both directions for several hours last night as the result of a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and a car. The accident was first reported just before 5 pm and occured at Milepost 222 on the Entiat side of the tunnel near Navarre Coulee road.

The Washington State Patrol reports that a motorcycle with driver and passenger was north bound on 97-A when it attempted pass a vehicle and ended up striking a car driven by 32 year old Marco Huerta of Chelan who was transported to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.

Killed in the accident was the driver of the motorcycle, 59 year old Wilhelm M. Penders of Winthrop. The motorcycle passenger, 60 year old Christine L. Dunn also of Winthrop, was airlifted to Harborview Hospital in Seattle.

With the highway closed for several hours, motorists in both directions were forced to reroute onto Highway 97. The roadway was reopened just before 10:00 p.m. Thursday.
