With many people ordering take out food from Chelan restaurants it has become apparent there is a need for places to sit down and consume the food. To help meet the need, the Historic Downtown Chelan Association has been given the green light to place tables at various outdoor locations beginning as soon as this weekend. The tables will provide restaurant customers a place to sit and also allow for adherence to social distancing rules.
The HDCA recently requested the special use approval and Director Erin McCardle said, “I’m ecstatic and so impressed the City was able to work through the process so quickly and give downtown the resources they need”. McCardle said tables will be placed in bulb-out areas featuring expanded concrete space. Locations will include Emerson and Wapato, Woodin and Emerson, the open plaza behind Kelly Allen Insurance and the grassy area of the new Woodin Avenue Landing park.
Another part of the special use permit will allow business owners to utilize up to 10 downtown parking stalls for outside business. The requests will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and the special use permits must be applied for by individual businesses. McCardle said priority will be given to restaurant operations. The decision to approve the request of the HDCA was announced at the Tuesday night meeting of the Chelan City Council.
