Girls Prevail 42-37; Boys CTL match-up decided in OT

Girls Basketball:
The Chelan Mountain Goats Girls Basketball team emerged victorious against the Cashmere Bulldogs in a nail-biting contest. The game was held at Cashmere’s home turf, but it was Chelan who ultimately secured the win.
The first quarter set the tone for the game, Cashmere took an early lead, finishing the quarter with a narrow advantage—Chelan 12, Cashmere 14. The Chelan Mountain Goats, however, were undeterred and quickly turned the tide in the second quarter, outscoring Cashmere to tie the game going into halftime—Chelan 22, Cashmere 22.
As the game progressed, the teams remained neck and neck. The third quarter saw both Chelan and Cashmere putting up 14 points.
In a dramatic fourth quarter, Chelan intensified their defense, holding Cashmere to just one point. The Mountain Goats managed to secure crucial baskets, inching closer to victory. With a final push, Chelan sealed the game with a final score of Chelan 42, Cashmere 37.
The scoring leaders for the Chelan Mountain Goats played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Brynn Hughbanks led the charge with 11 points, Lydia Petersen and Arabelle Finch contributed 9 points each, displaying a balanced offensive effort. Jailyn Reinhart added 7 points to round out the impressive performance from the Chelan squad.
Coach Longmire added “Tonight we didn’t play our best basketball but we played consistent throughout the whole game. It was enough for us to get a historic win against Cashmere. It has been over a decade since the Chelan girls have been able to secure a win against the Bulldogs. They have a great program and are coached well!”
With that win the Goats take possession of first place in the Caribou Trail Leauge (4-0) and improve their regular season record to 5-3.
Chelan hosts the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions on Thursday 12/21 at 5:45 pm at CHS.
Boys Basketball:
The Chelan boys basketball team picked up a Caribou Trail League win on the road at Cashmere 53-48 on Tuesday, December 19.The Goats needed overtime to secure the win and they once again did it with defense.
Chelan managed to build up an eight point lead during the first quarter but found themselves up just one 25-24 at halftime in this low scoring game.
Chelan again made another run at the start of the third quarter and momentarily held a10 point lead before back to back three point baskets by Cashmere’s Landon Baker and Riley Hatmaker.
Isaac Wilson paced the Goats in the third quarter with 9 of his game high 18 points during that quarter..
As the fourth quarter began, the teams were tied at 40 and Chelan starters Luca Faletto and Ryan Rainville were on the bench with four fouls each.
With the game tied at 46 and just seconds to go, Cashmere’s leading scorer, the 6-3 Rylan Nelson, drove to the basket under the tight defense of Chelan’s Zack Noyd.
Nelson, who finished with 14 points, was unable to get his driving bank shot to fall and Chelan’s Kellen Reinhart secured the rebound as time expired sending the game to overtime.
The overtime began with a driving reverse layin from Noyd and then after forcing a pair of turnovers, Chelan’s Dom Solarza’s and Isaac Wilson each got to the free throw line and made one of two shots.
Chelan forced a ten second violation with their full court press with under a minute to go, and on the ensuing play Kellen Reinhart was fouled and he put the Goats up five by hitting one of two free throws.
Landon Baker answered quickly for Cashmere with a bucket and brought Cashmere to within three points with 10 seconds to go. Chelan showed poise against Cashmere’s full court pressure defense and Cashmere was forced to foul Jacob Allen who hit both shots to seal the victory.
“It was great to see the guys force so many turnovers near the end of the game, ” said Chelan Coach Tony Callero. For the game Chelan forced 23 turnovers and had just 11 themselves.
“Any time you can hold a team to just 8 points over the final 12 minutes of the game, your chances of getting a win are pretty good.”
Chelan got 18 points from Wilson, 12 from Rainville and eight points from Reinhart. Cashmere’s leading scorers were Nelson with14 and Baker with 13.
The win improves Chelan’s record to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the CTL.
Cashmere drops to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the CTL.
Chelan’s next game is a non-league matchup at home vs Liberty Bell on Thursday, December 21.
