Eight Chelan High School Juniors Vie for Scholarships and a Crown on Saturday

You are invited to attend the 93rd Annual Miss Lake Chelan Scholarship Program, which will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 7:oo p.m. in the Chelan High School PAC. Eight CHS Juniors will be competing for scholarships and the honor of representing their community as the 2019-2020 Royal Court.

Following, in the order provided by the MLC Committee, is the portrait and biographical information for each candidate.

Caroline Kelly

Candidate #1: Carolyn Kelly

Caroline Kelly is the daughter of Patrick and Jennifer Kelly. Caroline is lead trumpet in the Jazz Band, co-president of the Kind Club, a member of Chelan Project, Science Olympiad, and drama club. Caroline plays trumpet in the community wind ensemble and works at Main Street Gallery. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking with her mom, playing piano, and going to the movies.

Caroline is still undecided on her plans after graduation but is considering majoring in biology or music performance.  Caroline’s favorite TV show is The Flash and her favorite movie is Les Misérables. Her favorite song is “Africa” by Toto and her favorite novel is The Book Thief by Mark Zusak. She is most inspired by Marie Curie and her most treasured keepsake is a necklace from  her Grandmother.

Caroline’s favorite thing to do in the Lake Chelan area is to go stargazing with her friends. Her proudest moment in life is her position as principal trumpet at the Sarge Huber Honor Festival and the Western International Band Clinic. If Caroline could trade places with anyone for a day it would be Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Caroline was born and raised in Chelan and would like to represent the people of this community that have influenced her to grow into the person she is today.

Ella Tschetter     

Candidate #2: Ella Tschetter

Ella is the daughter of Cari Tschetter. Ella is in the Future Business Leaders of America, Science Olympiad, Family Career and Communications Leaders of America, involved in the music department with her trumpet in (Jazz, Pep, Marching, Community, and Concert) band, and the Vice President of Membership for Phi Theta Kappa. Ella is also a frequent volunteer at the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society and always participates in “Taste of Chelan” during the spring and fall. She also works as an Apparel Associate in Walmart.

In her spare time, she enjoys dancing classical ballet, showing rabbits competitively, playing the violin and trumpet, as well as participating in public and impromptu speaking competitions. After graduation, Ella plans to attend Yale University to pursue family law.

Ella’s favorite TV Show is “The Office” and her favorite movie is “The Incredible Mr. Limpet”. Her favorite song is “Radio Ga Ga” by Queen and her favorite novel is “Ruby” by V.C Andrews. She is most inspired by her aunt Tine Nollmeyer Cox and her most treasured keepsake is a little stuffed cat that her ballet teacher, Joan Shelton, gave her after her first performance.

Ella’s favorite thing to do in Lake Chelan is to enjoy time with her friends and make lasting memories together. Her proudest moment was when she received one placement away from the National competition for an impromptu speaking competition. If Ella could trade places with someone for a day, she would pick a suffering animal. She loved animals more than anything. Ella feels she should represent the Lake Chelan area because she loves her town and the people in it. Ella always keeps a smile on her face and is involved in anything she can be to better Lake Chelan. She believes that she is a strong leader and has the motivation to speak up and represent Lake Chelan.

Haylee Fry

Candidate #3: Haylee Fry

Haylee is the daughter of Trish Fry and Bill Fry.  Haylee is involved in the CHS Jazz and concert band, 3 school clubs, and she is the school mascot for football and basketball.  Outside of school, Haylee plays the trumpet in the community band Valley Winds and works at Walmart.  In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, cooking and baking, knitting hats, and hanging out with friends.  After graduation, Haylee plans to attend Central Washington University and become a pilot.

Haylee’s favorite TV show is House M.D. and her favorite movie is The Proposal.  Her favorite song is “The Last Goodbye” by Billy Boyd and her favorite book is Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.  She is most inspired by her grandma and her most treasured keepsake is all the wonderful memories that she has accumulated so far in life.

Haylee’s favorite thing to do in Lake Chelan is to plan get together with friends.  Her proudest moment in life was receiving the goat position for the Chelan High School.  If Haylee could trade places with anyone for a day, she would trade places with her exchange student Thanyanun “Frame” Vinaiphat so she could experience what it is like to live in a completely new environment and culture.  Haylee believes she is a hard-working student and will fill the role of a Miss Lake Chelan candidate to the best of her ability.

Ana Torres

Candidate  #4: Ana Torres

Ana is the daughter of Celia and Cipriano Torres. She is on the school’s soccer and softball team and played basketball her freshman and sophomore year. She is involved in Interact Club, Med Club, band, competes in FBLA, is an officer for FCCLA, plays in her church worship team and is a full time Running Start student. In the summer, Ana worked for Chelan Fruit and helps with her mom’s Daycare. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, drawing, spending time with her family and playing with her dog Max. After graduation, Ana plans to go to Northwest University and become an Entrepreneur.

Ana’s favorite TV Show is Fuller House and her favorite movie is Black Panther. Her favorite song is “Over and Over” by Chris McClarney and her favorite book is “Before I Go” by Colleen Oakley. She is most inspired by her mom for her perseverance and strength to be both a mom and a dad after her dad had a stroke. Ana’s most treasured keepsake is a cross necklace her brother gave her for Christmas.

Ana’s favorite thing to do in the Lake Chelan Valley is go swimming with her family and have late night bond fires. Her proudest moment is when she won the FCCLA leadership award for her region. If she could trade places with anyone, she would choose Sadi Robertson for her passion and bold love she has for others. Ana believes she would represent the community well because she is a very outgoing person people can look up as a role model, is already very involved and can bring new and diverse ideas with the desire to bring her community together.

Ashlyn Sanderson

Candidate #5: Ashlyn Sanderson

Ashlyn Sanderson is the daughter of Shawn and DeAnne Sanderson. Ashlyn is involved in jazz band and concert band, is a varsity runner for both cross-country and track, and is also an officer in both the Chelan Project and ASB. Ashlyn has volunteered as a chaperone for 5th graders on their skiing trip to the Loup Loup ski hill. In her spare time, she loves to write, play the piano and saxophone, and backpack all over the Pacific Northwest.

After graduation, Ashlyn plans on majoring in elementary education and minoring in psychology. Ashlyn’s favorite TV show is The Office and her favorite movie is Now You See Me. Her favorite song is “Careless Whisper” by George Michael and her favorite book is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. She is most inspired by Princess Diana and her most treasured keepsake is her piano. Ashlyn’s favorite thing to do in the Lake Chelan area is to go backroading, swimming and backpacking.

Ashlyn’s proudest moment in life to date was winning first place out of Washington state for a leadership essay she wrote and winning a fully-paid, week trip to Washington D.C. to meet with 149 other leaders from around the United States. If Ashlyn could trade places with anyone for a day, she would trade places with Helen Keller. Ashlyn feels she should represent the Lake Chelan area because she is very involved in the Chelan High School and the local community. She knows many people in the valley and has lived here for 13 years and would be honored to serve as your Miss Lake Chelan 2019.

Talitha Zelaya

Candidate #6: Talitha Zelaya

Talitha is the daughter of Sara and Hever  Zelaya. Talitha has been involved in Med Club, Chelan Project, and band. She is currently in FBLA, track and is a Running Start student. Talitha has been a regular volunteer at VBS at Centro Cristiano Ministries and is now a dance instructor at Chelan Dance Academy. In her spare time, she enjoys dancing, writing, running, and going on outside adventures. After graduation, Talitha plans on transferring to a four-year university to finish her degree in Business or Interior Design.

Talitha’s favorite TV show is Full House and her favorite movie is The Bee Movie. Her favorite song is “Crowns and Thorns” by KB and her favorite novel is Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson. She is most inspired by her brother and her most treasured keepsake is her memory box where she stores thoughtful things such as birthday cards and letters.

Talitha’s favorite thing to do in the Lake Chelan Valley is go for walks downtown and Riverwalk. Her proudest moment in life is getting hired to be a dance instructor. She loves working with kids and enjoys sharing one of her passions with them. If Talitha could trade places with anyone for a day it would be her pastor’s wife, Marycela, to understand her strength and integrity. Talitha feels she should represent the Lake Chelan Valley because she loves the people that make up the community. In her short life, she has met people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences and is proud to call this community her home. Talitha has lived in Chelan her whole life and she wants to give back to the community that helped raise her.

Macaela LaPorte

Candidate #7: Macaela LaPorte

Macaela is the daughter of Jordana and Jeffery LaPorte. Macaela is active in the Drama Club plays and musicals, is Vice President of the Drama Club, shows steers at county fairs with Chelan FFA, and plays softball in the spring. During the summer she works at LaPorte Finical Alliance. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, listening to musicals, and making crafts. After graduation, Macaela plans to go to college and follow her passion, having something to do with literature and theatre.

Macaela’s favorite TV show is Friends and her favorite movie is Crazy Rich Asians. Her favorite song is “The Schuyler Sisters” by The Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton and her favorite novel is impossible to choose because she has read too many good ones. She is most inspired by her mom and her most treasured keepsake is a teddy bear made with alpaca hair that she has had since she was two.

Macaela’s favorite thing to do in the Lake Chelan area is to spend time with friends downtown. Her proudest moment in life was starring as Peter Pan, in the musical Peter Pan. If Macaela could trade places with anyone for a day, she would trade places with First Lady Dolley Madison, the wife of James Madison, our fourth President. Macaela feels she should represent Lake Chelan because she is diverse in what she does and wants to give back to the community she was raised in. She wants to be a strong role model for little girls and boys in this community.

Odaliz Ordaz

Candidate #8: Odaliz Ordaz

Odaliz is the daughter of Griselda Mendoza and Marcos Bravo. Odaliz is the captain of the Chelan High School Cheer squad, a member of the Art club, and Chelan Project. In the past, Odaliz has worked the Cherry season at Chelan Fresh. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, dancing and taking care of her 2-year-old niece Lily. After graduation, Odaliz plans on majoring in Criminal Justice and minor in the Music Industry.

Odaliz’s favorite tv shows are The Fosters and Orange Is the New Black and her favorite movie is The Breakfast Club. Her favorite song is “Seeing Blind” by Niall Horan and Maren Morris and her favorite novel is “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. She is most inspired by her mom and her most treasured keepsake is her blanket, which she’s had for almost 10 years.

Odaliz’s favorite thing to do in the Chelan valley is swimming at the lake with her family. Her proudest moment in life was when she showed her mom her grades which was all A’s and seeing how proud she was of her. If Odaliz could trade places with anyone for a day, she would trade places with Taylor Swift because of how hard she works and how she cares for everyone. Odaliz feels she should represent Chelan because she has lived in Chelan her entire life, and she is proud to call it home. She believes that she is a good role model, and she aspires to make everyone feel welcome and accepted.
