Dear Friends and Neighbors: Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, good food, and counting our blessings. I hope this letter finds you well, with a belly full of turkey and a heart full of gratitude. Speaking of blessings, aren’t we lucky to call the 12th Legislative District our home?

Nestled within the stunning landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, the region is characterized by a rich tapestry of urban and suburban areas. From the scenic beauty of Chelan to the bustling communities in King County, our slice of Washington is a gem, and it’s worth fighting for.

As your state representative, it’s my job to champion the continued growth and well-being of our district. Grounded in a deep belief in its potential, I am unwavering in my commitment to preserving our district’s well-deserved status as an exceptional place to live, work, and raise a family.

Now, let’s talk business!

Legislators are gearing up for an intense few weeks of work in Olympia. The 2024 Legislative Session is scheduled to kick off on Monday, January 8, ending on Thursday, March 7. Our state’s legislative cycle spans two years, including both regular and special sessions. This year we’ll have a “short” session—a 60-day period filled with legislative activity.

Commonly referred to as a “supplemental budget” year, along with bill proposals, short sessions typically focus on refining and adjusting our state’s three main budgets (operating, capital, and transportation), ensuring the state’s financial plans meet our evolving needs. Visualize it as a sprint to the finish line, where our focus extends beyond bills to negotiating changes in the state’s already approved biennial budgets.

In the weeks leading up to session, I’ll be busy researching proposed bills and policies, engaging in discussions with constituents like yourself and various interest groups, reviewing relevant data, and gathering valuable input. This comprehensive approach ensures that I am fully equipped to advocate effectively for the needs of our community during the upcoming legislative session.

Empowering your voice in the legislative process

As we draw near to the 2024 legislative session, your active involvement holds immense significance in influencing the policies that affect both our local communities and state. I want to ensure you have the tools and information you need to be an active participant in your state Legislature.

Whether it’s understanding the intricacies of a bill, participating in public hearings, or reaching out to lawmakers, you play a vital role in shaping the policies that impact our district and state. Please consider taking part in the following impactful actions:

• Learn more about the Legislative Process: Gain insights into the legislative process to navigate it with confidence and awareness.
• Read and review prefiled bills: One month prior to session, lawmakers can prefile bills. You can familiarize yourself with proposed legislation early on, starting after December 4. Understanding the content of prefiled bills is the first step in staying informed.
• Creating and sending comments on bills: Learn the ropes for crafting and submitting comments on bills to convey your thoughts to lawmakers.
• Sign in for public hearings: During session, you can actively participate in public hearings by signing in to show your support or opposition to proposed legislation. Your presence makes a tangible impact on the legislative record.
• Testify remotely or in-person: During session, share your lived experiences and insights during hearings, either remotely or in person. Remote testimony has been a game-changer for our district, eliminating the need for arduous travels in winter conditions.

Attention Students: Explore the House Page Program Opportunity!

Applications for the Washington State House of Representatives Page Program opened on November 1. House members can sponsor two pages. The enthusiastic turnout from our local students in 2023 was truly inspiring, and I expect the same level of enthusiasm in 2024. I strongly believe that serving as a page can be a significant part of a student’s education and life experience.

During their week-long term, student pages assist House members with various tasks, such as serving on the chamber floor, making deliveries across campus, supporting member offices, and participating in Page School. Their role is vital in ensuring the smooth functioning of the lawmaking branch.

• To be eligible, students must be at least 14 years old and not have reached their 17th birthday. Pages receive a stipend of $65 per day and can also earn up to 20 hours of community service.
• Student applicants who need financial assistance for the expense of traveling and staying in Olympia may also apply for the Gina Grant Bull Memorial Legislative Page Scholarship, which helps to offset expenses.
