Few people in the Lake Chelan Valley are strangers with Viki Downey. In fact, she probably was the person who taught them to swim. Or perhaps taught their children. Or their grandchildren.

Viki’s swim career began over 50 years ago as a lifeguard, and soon evolved into a passion for teaching. A passion that has continued for 5 plus decades.

“I have been instructing students in proper method and swim safety for 50+ years,” says Downey. “Teaching water responsibility not only gives the gift of confidence when swimming, but also provides a great physical outlet for exercise and recreation.”

Lessons are scheduled in two-week blocks and continue through mid-August.

A major source of revenue for the swimming lessons are the donations and pledges collected through the Polar Bear Plunge. This chilly, but heart-warming event is held each January on the Sunday of Winterfest (MLK Weekend).

The swim classes at Manson Bay are provided free of charge. Registration and session information can be found at the bottom of this story. Donations by the registrants are greatly appreciated but not required.

If you would like to donate at any time, please visit www.LakeChelanSwim.com

Participants and spectators enjoy a post-plunge bonfire.
