Gusty Winds and Low Humidity Bring Potential for Rapid Fire Growth

Information submitted by the National Weather Service in Spokane

The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a Fire Weather Watch for wind and low relative humidity. This warning is in effect on Saturday, July 11 for the afternoon and evening. This Fire Weather Watch is for the South Central and Central Cascade Valleys, including the Lake Chelan Valley.

A dry cold front will approach the region Saturday and press through late afternoon and evening. Temperatures ahead of the front will warm into the 90s, as humidity levels dry out between 10-20%. Southerly winds pick up early Saturday afternoon and into the evening, with gusts of 30 MPH or stronger expected.

This combination of gusty winds and low humidity will bring the potential for rapid fire growth through fine fuels and dry grasses.

This Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings.
