At 6:30 Friday evening, Orondo Fire responded to the report of a wildland fire at Darago Park along the Columbia River 4 miles north of Orondo. The first arriving units found a wildfire on hillside above the park burning in grass, sage and poplar trees. High gusty winds and dry conditions made firefighting efforts difficult.
Fourteen Orondo firefighters with six fire apparatus spent three hours on-scene extinguishing and mopping up the fire containing it to three acres. Campers in the Northern part of the park was evacuated by park rangers for safety reasons.
The cause of the fire is under investigation with the first notice of fire being high up in the poplar tree windbreak between the park and the neighboring orchard.
There were not any injuries or property damage.
