WSDOT starts planning process for annual spring clearing
information released, WSDOT photo above shows Washington Pass on March 1
Hello fellow North Cascades enthusiasts: First and foremost: it is not yet spring in the North Cascades and reopening work is not yet started. However, our crews did get together this week to check out the conditions on the passes, dig a snow pit, and take in some spectacular views. The report is that the snow pack is still pretty cold and hard and long-range forecasts call for active weather (more snow) in the next fourteen days. Crews will be prepping equipment and locking in the plan for spring clearing in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, is there something about the North Cascades Highway spring clearing that you’ve always been curious about? Send me your questions! If you are wondering, a lot of people are probably curious too.
For many, the sunshine and last weeks of winter are calling, so if you’re thinking about heading up past closure points for some back country fun, please consult the Northwest Avalanche Center for current avalanche conditions.
