The City of Chelan is eager to hear from the community about proposed projects in a new 5-Year Strategic Vision collaboration with Chelan County PUD. This initiative aims to explore enhancements for Chelan Gorge Park, Riverwalk Park, downtown infrastructure as part of the City’s Imagine Downtown Chelan plan, and future opportunities in South Chelan at the Reach 1 Trailhead.

Through this outreach, the City seeks valuable input from residents, local businesses, and community stakeholders to ensure these plans align with Chelan’s needs and environmental goals.

A key focus of the outreach is understanding the community’s desire for the Chelan River, the body of water between the Lake Chelan dam and the Old Bridge. With input from residents, we aim to shape Riverwalk Park to better serve both our current and future generations while protecting the natural beauty, purity and accessibility of the Chelan River.

“We have a wonderful relationship with the Chelan County PUD and this is an exciting opportunity to solidify a long-range vision on enhancing Chelan’s community spaces thoughtfully and sustainably,” said Erin McCardle, Mayor of Chelan. “We are at a critical juncture on what we want to see take place on the Chelan River. Should it be a space protected for more non-motorized recreational activities like kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding or should it be for additional boat access to downtown or both?”

Projects Under Consideration

The City is evaluating several projects based on environmental impact, community needs, and long-term sustainability:

  • Chelan Gorge Park Revitalization: Already underway and supported by a $100,000 Public Power Benefit Grant, this project envisions updates to Chelan Gorge Park, including expanded ballfields, accessible restrooms, paved loop trails with fitness stations, and a hydroelectric-themed art and history pathway.
  • Riverwalk Park Enhancements: Proposed improvements include bathroom renovations, pavilion upgrades, additional power access, interactive sculptures that could support year-round events, festivals, and family activities, additional ADA water access, additional motorized watercraft access, and improved shelter space.
  • Imagine Downtown Chelan Infrastructure Projects: Infrastructure upgrades to downtown Chelan include improved power reliability, new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and expanded high-speed fiber access for local businesses.

In reviewing proposed projects City Council and Staff have used the following criteria to evaluate project feasibility:

  • This project enhances the quality of life for all residents.
  • The project contributes towards expanding economic growth October-March.
  • The project allows everyone in the community to enjoy, regardless of income level.

Through these efforts, the City of Chelan reaffirms its commitment to a vibrant, sustainable future.

This public engagement process marks a critical step toward creating lasting improvements that balance community needs with environmental stewardship. We invite all residents to join us in envisioning the future of Chelan’s treasured community spaces.

Residents are invited to share their project priorities for Riverwalk Park and the Chelan River in an interactive survey and to stay updated on the project’s progress by visiting www.cityofchelan.us/feedback
