The City of Chelan is proud to join communities across the country in celebrating National Public Works Week (NPWW), May 19-23, honoring the vital contributions of public works professionals who help keep our cities strong, safe, and thriving.

Held annually during the third full week of May, National Public Works Week is sponsored by the American Public Works Association and has been celebrated nationwide since 1960. It serves as a time to recognize the often behind-the-scenes work that makes daily life possible—from clean water and efficient sewers to safe streets and dependable sanitation services.

This year’s theme, “People, Purpose, Presence,” highlights three cornerstone ideals that motivate public works professionals to serve in their communities every day. Meeting the needs of people is what gives public works its sense of purpose. Many times, public works professionals will never meet those whose lives have been impacted—because when things are going right, no one even notices public works is there. Yet, with or without fanfare, public works is ever present, working in the background to advance quality of life for all.

Here in Chelan, our we honor the Public Works Department and their commitment and professionalism with a series of staff appreciation activities culminating in a community “Touch a Truck” event on Friday, May 23, on Emerson Street. Local students from the Lake Chelan School District will get the chance to meet the people and equipment that power our city. The event is designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate the role of public works in everyday life for our youngest residents.

“Public Works Week is more than just a celebration—it’s a recognition of community service, purpose, and pride,” said Jake Youngren, Director of Public Works for the City of Chelan. “We’re excited to highlight the incredible work our teams do every single day to keep Chelan running smoothly.”

The City invites residents to join in the celebration by thanking a public works employee and recognizing the essential role they play in keeping our community vibrant and resilient.
