CHS Athletics Hall of Fame to Induct ’54 Football Team and Volleyball Coach

by Dennis Rahm

The Goats State Championship football team from 1954 and longtime Volleyball Coach Donene Hendricks will be inducted into the Chelan High School Athletics Hall of Fame this Friday evening during halftime of the boys’ basketball game versus Omak.

The ’54 football squad finished the season undefeated at 8-0, including three shutouts. Hendricks led the Lady Goat volleyball team to 12 state appearances including a State Championship in 2010. Under her guidance, Chelan volleyball captured nine league titles and seven district championships.

The Hall of Fame inductions will be part of the final home game for the Chelan basketball teams as they close out Caribou Trail League play by hosting Omak on Friday. They also play a non-league contest this week with a Thursday night doubleheader in Tonasket.

Both the boys and the girl’s teams have qualified for the District tournament at Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee beginning Saturday, February 9. The boys come in as the fourth seed and will again take on Omak in a 3pm loser-out game. The Lady Goats seeding into the District tourney won’t be determined until after the Friday game with Omak. Chelan currently is in third place in league, but a win over Omak would vault them into second place as a result of the tie-breaker. Whichever team finishes second will play highly ranked Cashmere in the District championship game while the loser of this Fridays game will play Okanogan in a loser-out contest.

The Friday night varsity doubleheader at Chelan will begin with the Lady Goats taking on Omak at 5:45 p.m. with the boy’s game scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Both games and coverage of the Hall of Fame induction will be broadcast “live” on LakeChelanNow.
