Star-Studded Class to be Inducted January 24, 2020

The Athletic Hall of Fame at Chelan High School will gain some high-profile members during the next induction ceremony scheduled for January 24, 2020 at the Chelan-Cashmere basketball doubleheader. Inductees will be honored following the conclusion of the Girl’s Varsity game and prior to the start of the Chelan Boys Varsity game. LakeChelanNow plans to livestream the induction ceremony on our Facebook for those unable to attend.

The Hall of Fame Review Committee is pleased to announce the following list of inductees:

2010 Class Joe (Joey) Harris, 2008 Class Tyson McGuffin, 2010 Class Kelly Bowers, the 1998 Boys’ State Championship team, 1990 Class Frank Velazquez, and Marjorie Borrill (Ma Rainier) former teacher, principal, coach and Athletic Director.

Joe Harris

Joe Harris, the 6th leading scorer all-time in Washington State basketball, had an illustrious career at Chelan earning first team CTL honors all four seasons, 1A Player of the year his junior season and as a senior was selected as Washington’s Mr. Basketball and the Gatorade Washington Player of the Year. He would go on to be a four-year starter at the University of Virginia and earn an All-ACC selection and ACC Tourney MVP in his senior year.

Joe was selected by Cleveland with the 33rd pick in the 2014 NBA draft and would later sign with the Brooklyn Nets. Harris has been a starter the past two years for the Nets and last year won the NBA All-Star Weekend 3-point Championship as well as finishing the season as the leagues top 3-point shooter.

In addition to being inducted into the CHS Hall of Fame, Harris will also have his #12 jersey retired – the first time in CHS history for this distinction.

Tyson McGuffin

Tyson McGuffin was a State Champion tennis player for Chelan and later served as a tennis pro in Yakima before gravitating to the wildly popular sport of pickleball. McGuffin is now the top-ranked Men’s Singles player in the world and is also ranked #4 in Men’s doubles play.

He would go on to sign the largest pickleball endorsement contract with Selkirk Sports which produces a Ty McGuffin signature series paddle.

Kelli Bowers

Kelli Bowers has the distinction of being a four-time state champion in golf. Bowers went on to a successful career at the University of Washington and after college played on the professional Symetra Women’s Tour.

Kelli is now an Assistant Women’s Golf Coach at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Arizona.

Marjorie Borrill

Marjorie Borrill (Ma Rainier) served in a number of capacities at CHS including teacher, coach, athletic director and principal from 1919-1926. She would teach full time until 1967 and continued to substitute teach until 1970.

In 1967 she was selected as the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Marjorie was also an accomplished athlete at the University of Washington where she served as Team Captain in basketball, baseball and hockey.

1998 State Champion Basketball Team

The 1998 State Champion basketball team was led by led by Hall of Fame Coach Joe Harris and featured Tourney MVP Phil Cullen who would go on to continue his basketball career at the University of Utah and who now is employed in the front office of the NBA San Antonio Spurs.

The 1998 squad became just the second basketball state championship team from Chelan joining ranks with the team from 1951.

Frank Velaquez – State Champion Wrestler

Frank Velazquez was an outstanding athlete and competitor at Chelan High School. During his career at Chelan, Frank was not only voted team captain, but also earned outstanding wrestler honors each year. In 1986, his freshman year, he was a state finalist at 122 lbs.  During his next 3 seasons at Chelan he would become a 3-time State Champion. He was a state champion in the 122lbs weight class his sophomore season, a state champion in the 129lbs weight class his Junior year and a state champion his senior year in the 135lbs weight class.

Frank would attend North Idaho College after leaving Chelan, where he was a NJCAA National Champion in both 1991 and 1992. He was also an Academic All-American, Team Captain and was voted the Outstanding Wrestler at North Idaho.  Frank then attended the University of Nebraska to wrestle. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Nebraska and became the Big Eight Champion in 1993, and 1994. He earned NCAA All- American honors, the Optimist Award and was voted team captain and outstanding wrestler of the Nebraska wrestling team in 1994. He continued to follow his passion for wrestling after he graduated, coaching as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska from 1995-1997.

January 24th will be a great night of remembering the past of CHS athletics and celebrating in the accomplishments of teams, coaches and individual student-athletes. Welcome to the HOF Class of 2019-2020.
