Donations received at Chelan Safeway will help provide healthy breakfasts for local children

Chelan Safeway Manager Jeremy Goforth enjoys writing checks. Big checks that represent donations generated by shoppers to support local projects and programs.
Over the past several months, $5,000.00 checks have been written to food assistance programs offered through Chelan Valley Hope and Chelan High School. During the 2019 holiday season, generous shoppers donated so much food in the Safeway collection boxes that the Chelan Food Bank was able to share items with the Waterville Food Bank.
Goforth is proud to state that “money generated at our store stays local”.
This month, Safeway stores (as well as Albertsons) have launched a Nourishing Neighbors community relief fund encompassing Washington, Northern Idaho and Alaska.
A subtle prompt has been included on the check out keypad as you pay for your groceries. “Would you like to donate to feed local kids?”
Contributing is as simple as pushing “$1 or $3 or $5” (or other or no thanks) and continuing with your check out process.
A dollar or more here and there adds up quickly, and hopefully the month of September will conclude with Goforth being able to write another generous check to support our community.

Campaign joins with customers to fund millions of breakfasts; effort builds on nearly $100 million raised for hunger relief in 2020 alone
Every child deserves a healthy breakfast. Every day.
That’s the stand taken by the Safeway Albertsons Nourishing Neighbors community relief fund, which throughout September will enable customers to donate money to help provide millions of healthy breakfasts for children in the communities they serve in Washington State, Northern Idaho and Alaska.
“Breakfast is an essential school supply for kids to learn, grow, and thrive,” said Seattle Division President Karl Schroeder. “In partnership with our generous customers, we’re proud to be one of the largest contributors to food banks and hunger-relief programs in the neighborhoods we serve.”
Throughout September, shoppers at Safeway Albertsons can donate at checkout to Nourishing Neighbors. Each store is partnering with a local charity that will use their local donations to fund healthy breakfasts for children in need in the community.
To help spread awareness of this important fundraiser, partner charities are being encouraged to use the hashtag #NourishingNeighbors on social media to engage the community on the progress of the campaign.
Nourishing Neighbors is a charitable program of the Safeway Albertsons Foundation, which is working to eradicate childhood hunger in America. With 14 million children in America not knowing where their next meal will come from, the funds donated by customers in September will be dedicated to local efforts that ensure every child has access to a healthy breakfast.
Central to the work of Nourishing Neighbors are two core beliefs:
- Children in America are suffering. Hunger is robbing them of their childhood.
- For a child in America, possibilities should be limitless. We teach our children to aim high…to reach for the stars. The hopes for our future rest on our children’s shoulders; our continued prosperity becomes their responsibility.
Nearly $100 million raised for hunger relief in 2020 to date
