Goats beat Cascade 55-54 in final seconds

by Dennis Rahm

Wow! A short three letter word that doesn’t begin to do justice to the unlikelihood and exhilaration of Chelan’s victory over the Kodiaks last Friday night. When Cascade scored with just over 5-minutes to play and took a 13-point lead it appeared the Goats were going to have a long bus ride home. As it would turn out, things were just beginning to get interesting.

Senior Quarterback Reed Stamps calmly led his team on a 4-minute drive that was capped by a touchdown pass and ensuing extra point to pull the Goats to within six points with a little over a minute to play. To have any chance to win, Chelan would need to execute a successful on-side kick and that’s exactly what they ended up doing. The Goats continued to defy the odds, and despite a game delay of several minutes when the stadium lights went out, Stamps was able to throw his sixth td pass of the game with just 11-seconds to play to Quinn McLaren to tie the game. Backup kicker Jahir Garduno was able to make the critical extra point and secure the one-point victory for Chelan.

The win served as the perfect early birthday gift to Head Coach Travis Domser. The win improved Chelan’s season record to 3-2 and 1-0 in league play.  The game summary from Coach Domser is posted below.

Last night was one of those reasons we love and want to be a part of high school football. From the lights going out in the 4th quarter to a 14 point comeback with less than 2 minutes left last night had it all. Our players deserve a ton of credit. They kept fighting for 48 minutes, and powered through when adversity was thrown at them. We stuck together and lifted each other to a big league win. We compiled 590 yards of total offense with 322 of those yards coming from the passing game. Our offense played well all night. Cascade did a good job on offense as well and it became a shoot out. With 11 seconds on the clock Jahir Garduno (who is our backup pat kicker) replaced  Quin Mclaren when the ref asked him to leave the field with a little blood on his elbow. (adversity) Jahir stepped up and hit a wobbler through the uprights to take a 1 point lead. Game ended with  us getting the final stop. Our next play mentality and winning attitude got us a win. We need to get better this week as we prepare for a physical game against Omak.
