Friday Morning Report: A Recap of Day One
Good morning to all
As we are finishing up our Breakfast this morning and preparing for Day Two at State… We have have some news to report. After a 3 hour trip to Cheney from Chelan, we all got to the stadium for some fun and watched great athletes from across the State and all classifications competing in various races. We had one of our own compete in one of those races.
Freshman, Elly Collins, competed in two different events yesterday. She competed in her first event; the 300 meter hurdle race. She started out in lane 1. But was not bothered by that. She came out fast and hard and was able to qualify for the finals. She will be in Lane 6 for the 300 hurdle race on Saturday.
She also competed in the Pole Vault. With a number of girls getting out around 9 feet. She came in at 9 ft 6 inches and started off well. In a strong field, she was not able to clear 11 feet. She is looking forward to getting better and stronger this summer to work on getting back to State in the Pole Vault. She was a couple of misses away from the top 3 at State. Her 6th Place finish was good enough to get on the podium and place a few team points for our Girls Track Team. Winning height was 12 feet 9 inches.
We had a great time at our first team dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings and got to bed early after a long day but exciting day.
Today, Friday May 25th, it will be fast and furious. We have a number of different athletes competing today.
- Ava Dickes – 100 and 200 meter prelims
- Matea Ivory – 100 Meter prelims
- Elly Collins – 100 meter low hurdle prelims at 11:20 am
- Girls 4×100 Meter Relay Prelims (Matea, Elly, Molly Oswald and Ava)
- Bert Mendivil – Triple Jump Final at 3:10 pm
We have a lot going on today and our kids are prepared for a long but exciting day. Thank you again for all that have helped with our kids and making the experience fun for everyone. Thank you to the parents for the “SWAG BAGS” for all of our kids, coaches and bus driver. Thank you to the Chelan High School and Booster Club for supporting our kids as well.
Today will be a jammed packed day, but we will be looking to update, as often as time allows. Good luck to everyone at state and I hope that you can make it over away from the tourists in Chelan and Manson and look to relax in Cheney.
Good Luck Boy and Girls from Chelan High School — Coach Romero

We hope for another great day of great weather. Again, I can’t thank the parents who all helped our kids get to this place. Thank you to our coaching staff for enduring the heat and battling tiredness. Thank you for to the LCSD and CABC for your support and help — Coach Romero
Sunday Morning Report: Day Three
Good morning to all
I wanted to first off say thank you for everyone that came out to support our kids on Day two… I will have day three ready for you later tonight.
We had a VERY busy day on Day 2. We had lots of kids qualify for Finals on Saturday
- Ava Dickes in the 100 meter Dash
- Elly Collins in the 100 meter hurdles
- Bert Mendivil finished 10th in the Triple Jump
- Girls 4×100 Meter Relay qualified for Saturday.
Bert finished his year off with a jump of 39 feet and 4 inches. Inches away making it into finals to get three more jumps. We, as a coaching staff, are looking forward to Bert coming back next year for another opportunity to make a statement and also to help be a leader for our Track team on the boys side next year. We hope that our boys continue to work hard and with the youth we have on our team. Should make for a fun and exciting time next year. We got better at the end and the boys started to see how all the hard work was paying off. Good luck to our boys during the summer in all their efforts to become better athletes and community members as well.
Our girls did well to get a lot done yesterday. Battling the heat was the toughest opponent. We did well to prepare our girls for the relay. It helps to have a veteran, in Ava, who has been to state and help calm so nerves. Our girls came ready to compete and go against the best in the state.
Go Goats and thank you again to everyone that helped us out. I am waiting on more photos and stats from the State meet. More to come. — Coach Romero
Monday Morning Report: Final Wrap-up
I hope that you were all able to survive, what Locals call “Beginning of Summer”. I know that I continue to be grateful to be away from some of the craziness of Lake Chelan on Memorial Day weekend. State Track is another form of craziness.
Thank you again to all of the parents for coming out Saturday morning and afternoon to support our team. I would also like to thank Eastern for hosting a great meet and providing a great venue for all kids across the state. We might not have had the outcomes we wanted, but we walked away knowing, that we gave everything we could and gave ourselves a chance to win in the 4×100 meter relay.
We started the day off with Elly Collins in the 1A 100 meter hurdle final. She barely qualified Friday morning, but nonetheless, she was able to come back Saturday and run a great race. Her time of 15.84 was a great improvement from Friday’s time of 16.28. She was able to finish 3rd overall and score some points for our girls team.
She also qualified in the 300 hurdles. This is a tough race for anyone to run. A fellow CTL Competitor from Cascade was able to come out with the victory. Congrats to Cascade’s Ashley Parton on the Championship. Elly also came with a strong showing for her first state appearance. She started off fast and aggressive and hung on for what felt an eternity. Elly placed 6th overall and was able to score some points for our team as well.
Ava Dickes, knowing this was going to be her last time running the 100 meter dash, gave everything she could. She too barely qualified for the final. She was able to battle a strong head wind and finish 6th overall in the 100 meter dash. Times were slower than Friday morning, with lack of wind in the prelims. Overall she scored some points for our girls team as well.
Our girls 4×100 team ran a great Prelim race and was able to secure a preferred lane heading into the finals on Saturday. There are never any guarantees when it comes to the relays in Track. After a strong run, we told our girls to go for it, and let the chips fall where they may. With a young core of girls, Matea Ivory, Elly Collins and Molly Oswald, lead by a senior in Ava Dickes. Our coaching staff was excited to see what this particular team could do when facing the best in the state. Our girls started off well, with a small bobble from Matea to Elly, but were still in 2nd place heading after the first pass. Elly to Molly was another small bobble, with a shot to give it to our anchor in Ava. We believed that if giving a shot we could get the victory. The team of Seattle Academy came with an attitude, of we are the team to beat, and they proved it. Their team came away with the victory. Our team came away with a third place finish in what was on of the best races overall at the State Meet. This team came together every single meet and getting better throughout the year. We were able to PR in the Prelims and come CLOSE to breaking a Chelan School record in the 4×100.
After it is all said and done, this year was filled with many awesome memories, and many things to look forward too. Even though we will be losing a good group of seniors, we have a young core of boys and girls that had a “TASTE” of what it takes to compete a high level. Our girls team is bringing back a number of girls that competed at state or came close to qualifying for state. Our boys team will look to our LONE State competitor this year, Bert Mendivil, as someone to look up too and see what type of work ethic it takes to compete day in and day out. We have a great group of boys as well that did not like to see only one boy to state. We look forward to a hard working summer both in the community and also in the off season.
Thank you to CABC for your support this year with equipment and support for kids at state. Thank you to LCSD for coming out and supporting our Track and Field team this year. Thank you for allowing our Coaching Staff to work with a great group of kids. Thank you to the parents and community members that made this a memorable Weekend for our kids at state. We could have not done this without your support.
Lastly, thank you to the Track and Field Team of 2018. You made this a great year. A tough year, but fun and enjoyable as well. You have made me into a better coach, teacher, and person. My family and I thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey here at CHS.
Good luck during the off season and less than two weeks of school. Finish strong and don’t let your efforts slow down. Set yourself up for next school year. — Coach Romero
