As Washingtonians take to the roads for camping season, the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) urges Recreational Vehicle (RV) operators to incorporate fire safety. In 2024, Washington fire agencies responded to 453 fires involving motorhomes, campers, and recreational vehicles – resulting in 7 fire fatalities and over $6 million in property loss. These mobile homes present unique fire risks due to compact living spaces, onboard fuel systems, and limited exits. Functional smoke alarms, escape route planning, and accessible portable fire extinguishers can mean the difference between a minor incident and a tragedy.

Whether you’re in a campground or traveling cross-country, being prepared is essential. RVs need to be equipped with working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and occupants need know at least two ways out. Fire extinguishers rated for RV use should be mounted near the exit and within reach of cooking or heating equipment. Don’t let a preventable fire ruin your adventure; take a few minutes now to stay safe all season.

The SFMO recommends these fire safety tips for RVs and campers:

  • Install and regularly test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep a fully charged, accessible fire extinguisher rated for Class A-B-C fires.
  • Always turn off gas appliances while driving or refueling.
  • Practice an escape plan including two exit options with all occupants.
  • Check electrical and propane systems before each trip for leaks or damage.
  • Never leave cooking unattended and cook only in designated areas with ventilation.
