Manson’s early learning approach showcases unique and impactful attributes

Excitement was in the air on Tuesday, April 15, as Manson School District welcomed a special group of visitors to its Transition to Kindergarten (TTK) program. Samantha Bowen, Executive Director of Early Learning at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), along with Jan Dosh and Janelle Bersch from the North Central Educational Service District (NCESD), spent the day exploring what makes Manson’s early learning approach so unique—and impactful.

The trio observed TTK teacher Leanna Cochran in action, engaging students through a thoughtful blend of academics and play-based learning. Also spotlighted was the seamless collaboration between the TTK and Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), which together form a well-rounded, student-centered approach to early education.

One highlight of the day? A sensory activity involving everyone’s favorite marshmallow treat—a Peep! Each student was encouraged to describe their experience using all five senses, and (unsurprisingly) “taste” was the hands-down winner.

After the classroom tour, Principal Ben Riippi hosted an informal sit-down with the visitors to dive deeper into the program’s implementation. The conversation focused on successes, areas of growth, and how OSPI can continue supporting this model program moving forward.

“This visit was a tremendous honor for our district,” said Principal Riippi. “Having the Executive Director of Early Learning here in Manson is a big deal. It gave us the chance to show off our beautiful new building, highlight the passion of our educators, and most importantly, celebrate our amazing students. What we’re doing here matters—and we’re grateful to have the support and recognition from the state.”

Manson’s blended approach—uniting TTK and ECEAP—sets it apart as a potential model for other districts across Washington. With a commitment to whole-child development and strong community partnerships, Manson School District is proving that innovative, play-based learning can lay a powerful foundation for future success.
