In a momentous decision for the future of our community, Chelan voters have approved a 0.3% sales tax increase to fund the City’s Transportation Benefit District (TBD). Passing by a narrow margin of just five votes, the sales tax increase deliver transformational benefits for our transportation infrastructure.

Revenue generated through this sales tax increase will be dedicated to projects that improve safety, enhance mobility, and reduce congestion. The City of Chelan will hold all TBD revenues in a designated special fund to ensure transparency and accountability. The increase will go into effect on January 1, 2025, and while collections will begin in early 2025, it will take a few weeks for the city to start receiving the funds. This careful stewardship is part of the City of Chelan’s commitment to ensuring that every dollar makes a meaningful impact for residents and visitors alike.

Over the next year, the City will evaluate the projects included in the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and conduct a comprehensive traffic study focusing on downtown congestion and Lakeside parking issues. The study will help identify solutions with the greatest potential to improve
traffic flow, benefiting drivers and pedestrians. Additionally, the City will refine cost estimates for a proposed two-way bridge and alternative options as requested by City Council.

As the City moves forward, residents will be kept informed about project evaluations, traffic study findings, and funding allocations. The approval of this sales tax increase signals Chelan’s commitment to a safer, more efficient, and connected transportation future.
