The community is invited to public meetings on April 4th and May 9th, starting at 7 p.m. at the Chelan Senior Center. Input will be gathered regarding the Chelan Butte Acquisition Feasibility Study
Efforts to preserve Chelan Butte for public use have been ongoing for years, most recently being spearheaded by the Chelan Basin Conservancy (www.chelanbasinconservancy.org). In mid-2023, a coalition of partners including the City of Chelan, Trust for Public Land, Chelan Basin Conservancy, Lake Chelan Trails Alliance, and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust were awarded $125,000 by the Washington state legislature to conduct the Chelan Butte Acquisition Feasibility Study.
This study is being managed by the Trust for Public Land, which has in turn hired Peter Dykstra and Diani Taylor with the law firm Plauché & Carr LLP to conduct the study. The purpose of the study is to determine what land might be available for purchase, how a land purchase could be funded, how the public would like to see such land used in the future, who would own the land, and how it might be maintained for public use in perpetuity.
A key component of this study includes input from the public. The Trust for Public land needs to hear from our local community the importance of preserving a portion of Chelan Butte and how they would like to see this land used in the future (for example, hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and/or other recreational uses). In order to gather this public input, the study will include two initial public meetings on April 4th and May 9th, starting at 7 pm at the Chelan Senior Center.
