In 2023, the Forest Service and Chelan County Natural Resources Department started work to complete large-scale habitat restoration in the mainstem of Nason Creek located approx. 17 miles northwest of Leavenworth, WA.
The restoration project aims to improve instream and floodplain habitat conditions in the Upper Nason Creek watershed for adult and juvenile salmonids through the placement of cut trees and engineered wood structures within the stream and increasing floodplain connectivity and stream cover.
To date, a half mile and 20 acres of restoration has occurred. Also, logjams and wood habitat structures have been constructed within Nason Creek, roads were decommissioned, and riparian areas were enhanced to restore landscape/floodplain connection and aquatic health. This project has also provided a significant boost to habitat for Endangered Species Act-listed spring Chinook Salmon, steelhead, and Bull trout.
The project will conclude in 2024 with the addition of four more logjams and further riparian planting. Thanks to our fantastic partners for their help with this project!
