A traffic stop Wednesday on a rural Chelan road led to a heavy response by county deputies, including a helicopter search.

Jason Reinfeld, the Chelan County sheriff’s chief of special operations, says it started with a noontime traffic stop of a green Subaru with four occupants, along Apple Acres Road about four miles north of Chelan. The driver and two occupants bailed out and ran, leaving behind one passenger, who told deputies at least one of the fleeing men was armed with a handgun.

A nearby homeowner along Rolling Rock Road soon reported a burglary attempt at their property, and deputies believed it might be one of the missing suspects. Reinfeld said six to seven deputies searched the area, along with another deputy and a pilot in a sheriff’s helicopter, but as of today (Thursday 2/27/20), none of the missing men have been found.

The occupant who stayed behind eventually drove away with the car, which turns out to have been reported stolen. Witnesses who spot a green 1999 Subaru Legacy, license plate BPH2755, should call RiverCom at 663-9911 to make a report.
