It was a tough night for Chelan basketball last Friday as Cashmere paid a visit and left town with convincing wins in both the girls and boys varsity matchups. The Chelan girls lost 64-24 and the boys went down to a 72-51 defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs.

Here’s the report from Lady Goats Head Coach Rob Huddleston.  “We hosted the Cashmere Bulldogs in a league matchup on Friday.  Cashmere came to Chelan with an unblemished record and recently winning the Portland Holiday Classic.  Cashmere opened the game by burying a 3 from the corner and they didn’t slow down the rest of the game.  Cashmere star, Hailey Van Lith, attacked the basket and drew fouls sending her to the free throw line.  She was also able to convert an “and 1” in the first quarter.  She scored 10 points in the quarter.  Booh Huddleston was able to convert the only field goal for Chelan in the quarter.  Chelan trailed 5-17 after the first quarter.

It was much of the same for the second quarter as Van Lith scored 9 points and Chelan only posted 5 more points.  5 other Cashmere Bulldogs also helped with scoring and at the half the score was 10-37.

Chelan came out of the locker room with a bit more fire and matched the scoring of Cashmere.  Huddleston drained a couple treys and Matea Ivory started attacking the basket and finished a scooping left hand lay-in.  On another drive Ivory was fouled and went to the line and sank both free throws.  At the end of the 3rd Chelan trailed 22-51.

Cashmere finished the game winning 24-64.  Van Lith finished around her average of 33 points. Huddleston led the Lady Goats in scoring with 14 points.

In the late game, the Cashmere boys enjoyed similar success in defeating Chelan 72-51. The Bulldogs opened up a 12 point lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained control throughout. Chelan Head Coach Jeff Pearl had this to say about the game, “we got outplayed tonight by a good basketball team.  We knew we’d be in for a challenge and unfortunately, we weren’t able to respond the way I’d hoped.  We gave them far too many second chance points, especially in that first quarter.  We can’t give up as many paint touches as we did tonight.  Cashmere did a good job of aggressively attacking the basket and we allowed too many drives into the key.  Although our effort was there tonight, and all our boys played hard, we didn’t do enough to keep ourselves in this game.” Cashmere post Carter Alberts was the games high scorer with 28 points while guard Nate Harding was the only Goat in double figures with 11 points.

It will be a busy basketball week ahead with three games on tap. Chelan plays Tuesday night at Omak and Friday night at Okanogan in a pair of CTL contests before returning home Saturday night for non-league games against Warden.
