Grossberg and Boykin advance to second round of play

The boys and Kaylin were thankfully spared another wet day today for their first tournament round after a soggy first half of their practice rounds yesterday.
On the boys side of things, Miles Grossberg (so) had a couple rough holes with some out-of-bounds issues on a tough course (Olympia Country & Golf Club), and came away with an 84 (his highest score all season), but was able to make it to the second day of competition by being in the top half of the field (actually sitting tied for 19th, with the top 40 continuing on to the 2nd day). Joey Gasper (fr) started out his round with a bit of nerves affecting him, but settled down as the round progressed; he finished the day with a 92, just 2 shots from the “cut” score. Parker Brown (so), Chelan’s third qualifying boy had a rough day, but wowed the assembled crowd as he chipped in for a birdie on the final hole in front of the clubhouse. Last year’s “cut” was 85, so that speaks a bit to the difficulty of the course this year. Though it’s not too long of a course, it has some narrow fairways, some difficult doglegs and greens, and a lot of very large trees–a course that requires a lot of good course management and calm nerves.
For Kaylin Boykin (jr), playing at the Tumwater Valley GC, it was a Jekyll & Hyde day, coming in with probably her best 9-hole score ever (40), but then finding trouble at #10 and following, coming in with a 56 on the back. But it was a “cut” line of 96, so she survived to play tomorrow as well, and is hoping to repeat her front 9 score from today for both nines tomorrow! Last year the “cut” was 100, so for the girls, perhaps a bit of an easier course this year compared to last.
For the two that made it to the second day, both participated in the State Championships last year, so maybe the extra experience helped….
[Note: Miles was the only boy of the 7 from our district who made it to the second day of competition, and Kaylin was the only girl from the CTL who made it to the second day.]
On Wednesday, Miles will tee off at 8:40 am, and Kaylin at 9:00 am.
