A matchup of two long time basketball rivals, coupled with the star-studded 2020 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, proved to be the perfect way to spend a cold January night last Friday at Chelan High School.

Cashmere Girls take game one in the double-header

It was a packed house as Chelan hosted Cashmere in a Caribou Trail League double-header. In the first game of the night, the number-one ranked Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Goats 66-39 as Cashmere standout Hailey Van Lith led all scorers with 27 points.

Upon completion of the girls’ game, the attention of the crowd remained focused on the court as the school hosted a special ceremony between games to induct five individuals and one team as the newest members into the Chelan Athletic Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to 2010 Class Joe (Joey) Harris, 2008 Class Tyson McGuffin, 2010 Class Kelli Bowers, the 1998 Boys’ State Championship team, 1990 Class Frank Velazquez, and Marjorie Borrill (Ma Rainier) former teacher, principal, coach and Athletic Director.

You can watch the induction ceremony in its entirety below and click this link to a previous LCN story on the inductees which provides details about their background and athletic careers.

In addition, you can listen to LCN audio interviews with members of the 1998 State Championship Basketball Team including former players Phil Cullen and Luke Dobbs and former Coach Joe Harris.

One of the highlights of the evening was the first-ever jersey retirement and Hall of Fame induction of basketball star Joe Harris, now a member of the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA. The Nets produced a congratulatory video featuring comments from teammates including Kevin Durant and Kyree Irving, the head coach Kenny Atkinson and the team General Manager, Sean Marks. There’s also a second video that shows Joe thanking the Hall of Fame committee for the honor.

Once the ceremony was concluded, it was back to basketball.

In the nightcap, the Chelan boys overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half to send the game to overtime as the result of a last second three-point shot by freshman Braiden Boyd. Chelan ran out of gas in the four-minute overtime and Cashmere remained undefeated in league play with a hard earned 62-50 win.

Chelan returns to league play Tuesday night (1/28) by hosting Omak in another Girl/Boy doubleheader.
